Amputee pushes disabled athletes to aspire for more
Achilles International, the nonprofit Dick Traum started almost 30 years ago provides free athletic training, support and a sense of community to more than 10,000 disabled athletes in 70 countries worldwide. For more than 30 years, Dick Traum’s nonprofit has been providing free training and support for disabled athletes.
The idea is relatively simple. At weekly runs, able-bodied volunteers are matched with disabled runners who have a variety of physical and mental challenges.
“Amputees, strokes, autism, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy -- you probably can't think of a disability that's not represented,” Traum said.
Running side by side, the athletes get in shape, build confidence and make friends.
Achilles St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk
The annual Achilles St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk is a five kilometre run or walk (your choice!) through the heart of downtown Toronto. In 2013, we celebrated our 14th year anniversary.

Achilles Canada is a non-profit organization that provides people with various disabilities an opportunity to receive the physical, psychological, and communal benefits of running. The club offers training and support by able-bodied members to its Achilles athletes of all ability levels. Guide runners and volunteers are always needed, and sponsorship is greatly appreciated.
Achilles Canada welcomes people with all disabilities such as visual, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, arthritis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, amputation, cystic fibrosis, or those who suffer from stroke, cancer, traumatic head injury, and many others. Runners participate with crutches, in wheelchairs, on prostheses, and without aid.
From the beginner to the advanced, there is a range of program levels available to suit all personal requirements. This ensures that members remain challenged while continuously improving and realizing their potential.
